Diego Stocco creates Adaptive Tonal Processing

Color Bots is a processing Live session specifically designed for Ableton Live Standard Edition 9.5 or later; no Max4Live or 3rd party plugins are necessary to run Color Bots.

For Color Bots, I developed a new technique called Adaptive Tonal Processing, that is based on a combination of cross-synthesis and harmonically complex musical phrases. Once you become familiar with the sonic concept behind these Colors you could also try to create your own and use them in Color Bots.

Color Bots generates new tonal elements by “coloring” the rhythmic and dynamic profile of a loop. The resulting sound can be manipulated through the Macro Controls and played tonally from a keyboard.

A smaller but different version of Color Bots is also available, and it’s called Color Bots MINI; it contains the full synthesis/processing chain but only 10 Colors, different from the ones available in Color Bots.

What would I use Color Bots for?

Music production, sound design, live performances, to learn about sound design techniques.

How many Colors will I find in Color Bots?

In Color Bots you’ll find 50 Colors created from a variety of custom instruments, acoustic and electronic sources. Depending on what loop you will process and the settings of the Macro Controls, you could end up creating very different results even when working with the same Color.

What's the difference between Color Bots and Color Bots MINI?

The Colors. Both contain the same synthesis/processing chain but Color Bots MINI contains only 10 Colors (different from the 50 Colors that you can find in Color Bots).

Can I make my own Colors?

Colors are seamlessly looping audio clips with a rich frequency spectrum. Once you become familiar with the ones you can find in Color Bots and Color Bots MINI you could try creating your own and then load them into the session.

What are the Macro Controls for? And, can I personalize them?

The Macro Controls are assigned to the most significant parameters of the Color Bots synthesis chains, allowing you to easily change the sound without having to dig into the various effects units. However, if you are familiar with Live, you already know that you could re-assign the Macro Controls to other parameters, or add new Macro Controls for additional effects or 3rd party plugins you like to work with.

What version of Live should I use?

You’ll need at the very least Live 9.5 Standard Edition, but I would recommend using the latest update available for the Standard Edition. Please note that Color Bots won’t work with the Intro version of Live.

Are the rhythmic loops you're using in the video introduction part of the product?

No, those are just for the purpose of the demo. However, in the video introduction I’ve used a couple of loops that come from the library of Live Standard Edition (“Jazz Brushes-70bpm” and “Dubstep Slow-126bpm”), so you could try those out in Color Bots if you want.
